Gothic style in the interior

Gothic is not only gloomy stone arches, lancet windows and stained-glass windows. This description applies to public buildings and cathedrals. In the interior, the Gothic style is usually manifested in a milder version. It can be described as a solemn and pretentious way of arranging a home.

Traditional neo-Gothic fascinates, leaves no one indifferent. This style has a claim to a high status, indicates the royal character of the owner of the premises. It helps to understand what heights a person was able to achieve in his work and life.

History

Modern Gothic style in the interior was most developed in the 12th century. It was then that in Europe began the process of transformation of society, which was reflected in urban development.In the Gothic style began to make out mansions and country houses of the rich. Therefore, this direction has never been the prerogative of the poor.

Buildings with high ceilings required a special design. Simple interior techniques no longer satisfied the crowned persons and noble nobles. And the universal desire to become closer to God also played a role in the spread of this style. In Gothic, there are many hints of oriental style, since the crusaders, carrying their faith around the world, managed to visit many countries of the East.

Styling features

The stylization of a Gothic building has its own clear rules. Small rooms with low ceilings can be complemented by Gothic elements. And halls with high ceilings lend themselves well to stylization in the Gothic style

The Gothic style includes the following basic shades:

  • Saturated red;
  • Golden;
  • Brown;
  • Monochrome black;
  • Gray;
  • Yellow;
  • Blue;
  • And silver.

Designs and forms of style must certainly strive upward. To achieve this effect, cruciform arches, columns and openwork ornaments are used.

So that the gothic style in the interior does not look gloomy, the overall image of the room is diluted with stained-glass windows, light tones, and mixed with other styles.

Therefore, a bedroom or a room decorated with this design should have a well-thought-out arrangement of furniture and accessories. Today, this interior design involves the use of vibrant accents. For example, among the classic variations you can see a pink sofa or an abundance of houseplants in the living room.

Modern interior

Still modern interior with this design involves the use of pseudo columns or artificial stucco moldings. Stained glass can also be considered as a convention. They are made only at the top of the window, or limited to stained glass on the doors and sideboards.

Spiral staircases in multi-level apartments and houses are still a distinctive feature of medieval design. And imitation of animal skins on the floor and walls is no longer considered one of the classic canons of style.

Walls

In one residential area, the walls can be decorated in different ways. For example, in the living room, the space is divided into a relaxation area, a fireplace and a reading corner. Wooden wall upholstery is suitable for all areas except those with a fireplace. In the fireplace area on the wall is masonry. The library in this style can be decorated with leather inserts on the walls, and the rest of the rooms can be decorated with relief stucco or niches, stretched up to the ceiling.

Walls with patterns in the interior in the Gothic style

Arrow-shaped and cross-shaped ceilings are the hallmarks of style. They arose during the time of the Crusaders, are closely related to the shape of the Catholic cross. Therefore, the walls in the room where the execution of the Gothic design is planned must have a sufficient height. Otherwise, the style will resemble an oriental rather than a Gothic design.

Ceiling

If there is much debate about the walls in the Gothic style, then the designers show more agreement on the design of the ceilings. All ceilings should be high. The castle version of the ceiling implies a large number of arches, but in this way a restaurant or a public hall can be designed. In the apartment, the ceiling in the "Goth" style is made using drawings, stucco moldings and ornaments, examples of which can be seen in the works of artists of the Middle Ages.

The ribbed vault is the main technique for styling a Gothic style in a living room. Broken lines, interlacing arches and elevations well characterize the ceiling in the Gothic design.

Floor

Using the medieval flooring technique, one cannot rely on modern materials. So neo-Gothic implies the use of wood and stone on the floor. The entire coating pattern should be clear and symmetrical. Blurring lines and roundness of shapes are not welcome here.

Gothic floor

The main feature of the Gothic gender is an illusory perspective. Even when laying floors, contrasting colors are used to achieve the effect of the maze.

Windows and doors

Gothic country houses look more like a castle than a private cottage. There, windows and doors are of great importance, they become an interior highlight, reduce the appearance of the room into a single composition.

Door portals are framed by stone strokes. On the windows must be present stained glass window or pattern, built with lead tape.

Lancet forms are considered the main condition for the execution of the interior in the Gothic style.

To add Victorian romance and magical charm, Tudor layout in the form of bars is used on the windows. Heavy and dense curtains with brushes are added to such windows, and the stained-glass window is used in their upper part.

Materials

The characterization of Gothic design would be incomplete if it were not for a detailed description of the materials that can be used for decoration.

Textiles in neo-Gothic are used only dense. All light and airy tissues should be put aside. Velvet, curtain fabric, velor and brocade - these are the favorites that make up the medieval atmosphere.

During construction and decoration, marble, wood, forged elements, glass, stone and other natural materials are used.

Natural materials in the interior in the Gothic style

Neo-Gothic will not look harmonious if too many plastic or other artificial elements are used in creating the design.

Gothic style is an expensive option for interior design. This state of affairs is due to natural details and antique things.

Color palette

Cheerful flower, sea wave, sun glare? These prints in the design of the Gothic living room can not be found. All tones for any room are selected in a discreet range.

The leading role in styling a bedroom or kitchen is given to darkened shades. Although the bathroom can make an exception.

Consider the relevance of the color palette for Gothic in more detail:

Matching colorsForbidden Shades
Monochrome: black and whiteLight green
Green (natural shades)Orange
Red (all dark variations)Crimson
Blue (and its derivatives)Turquoise
Yellow (gold)Lilac

Neo-Gothic today allows the use of purple and pink accents in the overall Gothic composition. Emerald and blue blotches of flowers are also welcome. The most striking element of the interior is reputed to be stained glass. It is in them that the purest and most juicy colors appear. Thanks to the stained-glass windows, the play of light in the room makes its appearance mysterious and warm.

Furniture

Among many other styles, the English version resonates most with Gothic. They are related by general restraint, solidity and harmony of lines. Therefore, choosing furniture for the Gothic interior, you can use the elements of the English style.

Gothic style furniture

Carved backs of chairs with images of animals, sculptures, religious paraphernalia - all these are classic manifestations of Gothic. The abundance of ornaments, upward-looking details, drapery and pillows with embroidered cobwebs directly indicate the neo-Gothic architecture.

Furniture fittings are selected mainly copper. All furniture should be made of natural wood: oak, cedar, ash, walnut or pine. Monograms and fishnet clippings on cabinet doors are also welcome.

Lighting

The highlight of the Gothic style is a huge metal chandelier under the ceiling. Of course, earlier light bulbs in it were replaced by candles, but even today there are lighting devices in the form of candles. Such a chandelier should have chains or forged parts. Its color can be both dark and light. Modern lighting options add glass decorations.

Antique candelabra with ornate candlesticks is a good way to give the appearance of the home solemnity. Simple floor lamps and lamps are not used here. Everything should be stylized as a castle style of the Middle Ages.

If the use of lighting devices that do not fit into the overall composition is implied, they are decorated with more ancient things.

Through the prism of lighting, you can consider the use of Gothic roses. In the present, designers advise reproducing a stained glass window with a rose not only on glass, but also using this image to imitate false windows, behind which you can hide different lighting elements.

Wall variations of fixtures are mainly used in decorating fast food restaurants or institutions for high public. Since there is no way to do without wall lighting.

The buildings of the last decades are not quite suitable for the use of Gothic design in them. But its elements can be used both in enterprises and in residential premises. For example, the mansion of Sandra Bullock is completely made in the Gothic style. And Nikas Safronov’s apartment “absorbed” its best components.

Modern neo-Gothic is also subject to change, as well as other interior trends. The age of technology dictates its own rules. And not to take them into account means to abandon the increased comfort and convenience. When creating a Gothic interior, do not get too hung up on the authenticity of things and accessories. It is better to pay attention to the general concept. Since it is she who creates the right atmosphere.

In the present, orders for decoration in the neo-Gothic style are not often received by designers. To live in your own little castle requires a special state of mind. But if a person is a fan of the heyday of the style, then he will be able to realize the Gothic idea so that it fits perfectly into the chosen room. Gothic - a direction that can be compared with art.
