Kitchen ceiling design

At first glance, it may seem that the ceiling plays a secondary role in the design of the room. They don’t install furniture on it, they don’t walk on it, and guests and households do not raise their eyes up too often. In fact, the ceiling is a kind of “gray cardinal” of the interior. He can make a small room larger, empty and large - voluminous and comfortable, and a lower one - higher.

All this can be done using simple design techniques. Even the problem of constantly noisy neighbors from above is solved by competent decoration. Previously, they did not think about the design of ceilings: either painted or whitened. Particularly creative craftsmen managed to paste them with wallpaper. A modern range of materials and technologies opens up new possibilities. Let's talk about kitchen ceilings and their features.

Kitchen ceiling requirement

The kitchen is a special, small world of the hostess in the universe of the house. Unique aromas of dishes hover here, the family gathers here in the morning for a cup of coffee and scrambled eggs, guests here like to sit for a cup of tea. No other room in the apartment has such a microclimate as in the kitchen. Constant fluctuations in humidity and temperature, accumulation of aromas and by-products of cooking. Due to these features, the requirements for the design of the ceiling, walls and floor are also unique. Before starting repairs, they think through all the nuances and details so that the result is not only practical, but also durable. The "box" of the room - walls, floor, ceiling, you can not change every couple of years, as you can do with furniture.

Materials and decoration methods

Finishing work is carried out using the following materials:

  • Putty;
  • Primer;
  • Lime or chalk;
  • Water-based paint;
  • Wallpaper of various kinds;
  • Drywall;
  • Plastic;
  • Wood; ъ
  • Vinyl stretch fabric;
  • Suspended metal structures with attached ceiling tiles.

Decoration of the kitchen ceiling with lamps

Ideas for decoration derive from fashion magazines or their own imagination, which, as you know, does not recognize borders. But there are several "vectors" by which you can implement your design ideas:

  • Color;
  • Shine;
  • Texture;
  • Relief;
  • Combinations of materials;
  • Drawings, paintings, ornament.

We will talk more about each of the options.

Whitewash

An outdated way to decorate the ceiling, a "classic of the genre", which is considered to be an economical way. For high-quality whitewashing, you need to carefully scrape off the kitchen ceiling from the old layer. If there was lime or chalk from below, it is simply washed off along with stains of grease and dirt. The work area is conditionally divided into squares, each of which is thoroughly moistened with water with a brush. The algorithm is simple:

  • Wet the first square;
  • Scrape off the old layer with a spatula;
  • Wet the second square;
  • Wipe the first with a damp sponge.

These steps must be repeated from square to square. This is the only way you can save time and complete everything quickly enough. Then the joints of the ceiling slabs are glued with a serpentine, the bumps and roughness of the surface are puttyed. When the putty dries up, if necessary, wipe it with sandpaper to smooth the surface, and cover it with a primer. After the primer has completely dried, you can start whitewashing. There are only two materials to choose from:

  • Lime;
  • A piece of chalk.

For work, you only need a container and a roller or brush. The floor is covered with newspapers.

Conditional division into squares is necessary. If the ceiling is completely wet, then until you get to the end, the very first centimeters will have time to dry out.

Painting

The second simple but old way is painting the ceiling with water-based paint. It is based on water, pigments and polymers. After application to the surface, water evaporates in a day, and the polymers form a dense “crust” that lasts a long time and is resistant to ultraviolet, water and temperature extremes. The market of paints offers a wide range of "water emulsion" with additives:

  • Silicone;
  • Acrylic
  • Latex;
  • Silicate;
  • Polyvinyl acetate.

Acrylic, silicone and latex are not afraid of water. They are washed and used in rooms with high humidity. Silicone lays well on untreated surfaces, and polyvinyl acetate is considered cheap and is used only in dry rooms. For the kitchen, the first three options are suitable. Although in extreme situations the surface may not be prepared, such paints will even fall on it, it is better to remove the old layer, fill the bumps and primer. For work you will need:

  • Putty knife;
  • Big, small brush;
  • Roller;
  • Tray for cleansing brushes;
  • Tray with a ribbed surface for the roller;
  • Gloves.

Paint at least once, but everyone tried. The difficulty in working with the ceiling lies in the inability to "lift up" one’s head for a long time and raise hands. Take a break every half hour.

Wallpaper

Everything is simple with the wallpaper: they are glued in the same way as on the walls, but with small nuances. There are no restrictions on the material. You can purchase any of the popular:

  • Non-woven;
  • Liquid;
  • Cullet;
  • Vinyl.

In the kit for wallpaper you need high-quality glue. If the material is slightly easier to hold on the walls, then on the ceiling their own weight will constantly pull down. It depends on the quality of the glue and the properly prepared surface how long they will last and how well they will grip in the first hours.

Wallpaper on the kitchen ceiling

Dissolve the glue in the container. If the wallpaper is paper or vinyl, then it is applied to a dried primer, if non-woven is used, then to a roll. When working with a ceiling, it is preferable to cover both surfaces for safety reasons. You will gradually unwind the roll, which is easy to direct in the right direction without error and curvature. If you glue an already deployed strip, then coordinating the process will be much more difficult.

Do not forget that the room after work can not be ventilated until the wallpaper completely dries, otherwise they will swell or fall off altogether.

Gypsum plasterboard

Plasterboard coating is convenient to use for ceilings that have obvious defects and irregularities that cannot be smoothed out at the preparation stage. The material allows you to create a two-level coating that zones the space in the combined rooms. Popular kitchen studios are delimited into functional areas not only with furniture or lighting, but also with levels on the ceiling and floor. Drywall can withstand high humidity and temperature jumps. It provides additional sound insulation, will not crack when the house shrinks, but it is difficult to mount and lowers the ceiling.Drywall is not recommended for use in rooms with low ceilings, because even a play of color will not save the situation, and a feeling of "dungeon" will appear.

Plastic

Plastic ceilings are considered an excellent combination of price and quality. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to install and clean. This material withstands all the features of the microclimate of the kitchen. If the neighbors flood, the ceiling will simply dry out without any visible damage. Plastic panels are distinguished by colors, patterns and textures. The owners of kitchen-economy class especially liked the materials imitating the pattern of stone, wood, marble and metal.

The only significant drawback of plastic ceilings was a decrease in the height of the room. The material “eats” up to 5 cm, which is not much less than in the situation with drywall. However, plastic also does a good job of concealing wiring and ceiling defects.

Suspension

False ceilings are used to the full in office premises, although for the house you can pick up the original tile, on which there will be no "government" plaque. Pendant panels look impressive and modern, so they fit into the design of the kitchen in the modern, high-tech and industrial styles. The design is based on a rather complicated system of fasteners, which are first mounted in a “draft” ceiling, connected to each other and only then attached to decorative tiles. Naturally, such a “box” will be a gift for apartments with wiring sticking out in all directions and a ceiling surface more reminiscent of a tectonic fold than a perfectly flattened plain. False ceilings can be:

  • Modular;
  • Filing (without the use of suspensions).

Modular are also classified into:

  • Cassette
  • Rack and pinion;
  • Trellised.

It is worth noting that an expensive suspended ceiling with a complex frame structure and high-quality slab material does not look as cheap as some people think.Drywall is mainly used in economy class variants, but finishing with this material is not limited to.

Wooden

Nothing can replace a natural tree, which in the literal sense of the word “breathes” natural pores. Unfortunately, wood can dry out with constant heating, and begin to rot due to humidity. This problem is solved using special solutions that process the material before use. It impregnates and lays on the wood with a thin crust that does not close the pores, but slows down the destruction processes. The wooden ceiling is perfect for almost any design area. This is the advantages of the material: it is universal, due to the diversity of the texture of the natural pattern and variations in the color scheme.

Slatted ceilings are not as easy to install as it might seem at first glance. Their design is modular and resembles suspended ceiling. Reiki is stacked not only according to the standard version, tightly applying to each other. If you approach the task wisely and embody original ideas, then the rack and pinion “drawing” will become a masterpiece. We are talking not only about the chess field, but also about intricate geometric patterns.

Beams and false beams are also popular in country, provence, rustic or ethnic styles. They decorate the ceilings not only in the kitchens of private country houses, but also in modern apartments or small Khrushchevs.

False beams are a creative solution for rooms in which it is necessary to hide pipes, wires or processing lines.

Tension

Stretch ceilings look elegant and luxurious. They have no seams, and the strength is surprising: with a "flood" from above, each square meter is able to withstand a load of up to 100 liters of water. He dangerously "hangs" over the room, but will contain the liquid and protect the rest of the situation. When the water is removed, the ceiling will return to its original position.Vinyl, from which the canvas is made, refers to materials of medium combustibility, therefore it is considered fireproof. Stretch ceiling can be:

  • Matte;
  • Glossy with a mirror shine;
  • With original design in the form of drawings and ornaments.

A significant minus is an unpleasant odor that briefly settles in the kitchen after installation. Over time, the amber will disappear, but at first it will have to endure.

The stretch ceiling is moody in leaving. It is easy to wash, but mechanical damage can be fatal to this material, so you should handle it carefully and gently. On large areas (more than 50-60 square meters), visual detection of seams between the canvases is possible.

Two-level

It is used not only to mask irregularities or ugly, but important details, but also to delimit space. Usually the "steps" on the ceiling echo with similar "platforms" on the floor. It is relevant for studios and large apartments or houses, where the dimensions of the rooms allow you to place the kitchen together with the dining room or living room. Any of the above ceiling coatings is suitable for creating several "steps". It’s more convenient to work with modular ones: the design allows you to think through all the nuances even in the process of designing the frame.

To emphasize the relief of the ceiling, many designers resort to a simple but effective solution. They place rows of light bulbs along contrasting zones. The wiring is hidden behind the false panels. Light accent attracts attention and adjusts the ceiling plane.

Combined

When decorating the ceiling of the kitchen-living room or dining room, the border of the functional areas is emphasized not only with colors and light, but also with materials with different textures. Drywall, plastic, wood and vinyl stretch canvas can be combined with each other. Any of these materials are combined, if you approach the selection of textures and colors wisely.“Duet” with a light hand will become the highlight of the room, from which guests will not take their eyes off. Do not overdo it and involve in the experiment more than two types of completely different materials. Rough contrasts often spoil the design.

Color tips

When choosing a color, it is worth focusing primarily on the size of the room. White and light shades will visually increase it, and the ceiling will appear higher. Additional lengthening is carried out by “striped” wallpaper or decorative columns, tending upward. Dark colors bring perspective. They are used only in large combined rooms. It is worth noting that with the dark you need to be careful in the kitchen-dining room. Scientists have long proven the effects of environmental color on human appetite. It will be enhanced only by warm, “soft” shades, and you will have to refuse dark, but cold (blue, gray). Pay attention to the abundance of natural light. Cold shades are used in the kitchen, which is bathed in sunlight. In rooms deprived of such warm "attention", its deficit is compensated by orange, yellow and their shades.

Lighting

Luxurious, heavy chandeliers, even in a classic kitchen, will look too pretentious and elaborate. The choice is often stopped on compact fixtures, which can be creatively modern or imitating “antiquity”. There should be a lot of light. Particular attention is paid to additional lighting above the working area of the cook (countertop). It is illuminated with miniature bulbs or LED strips, as usual ceiling lighting is usually not enough. If the kitchen is large, then think about paired fixtures or emergency "lighting" help in the form of rows of bulbs along false panels, "steps" of a multi-tiered ceiling, special gaps between it and the wall.

Conclusion

The kitchen is a significant room in which only the hostess spends half of her free time.Her household chores should not spill over into a heavy duty, which can be prevented by filling out a "study" with taste. If the dimensions allow you to combine the kitchen with the living room or dining room, then here the whole family is constantly "indirectly" present. The walls are partially covered by furniture, the floors are covered with rugs, and the ceiling is always open for the eyes of households and for pollution. When developing a project of its design, build on not only external beauty, but also on the terms of operation and the ability to endure all the tests of the kitchen climate.

I love needlework and everything connected with it. Especially home-made furnishings are my passion!
